Class Wiki

Here is a wiki page that I created for our class project.  Students will be required to respond to questions that I post about the project.  Since this project will be spread out over a few months this will be a way to stay updated with what students are researching and to see there progress. Among other things, I imagine that I will post questions on the discussion part of the wiki to prompt students thinking and their investigations.  They will be responding to each others post and giving feedback.

Glogster about Ethiopia

I have been working on this over the last few weeks and seem to have difficulty with the program. I am not sure how it will appear but it hasn't been updating my recent changes! The main idea and assignment would be to create a glogster about a particular country of interest. This is an example of what students could put together to share with the class to broaden our understanding of cultures around the world.

Books about global citizenship

Here is a list of books I found at 22books.com under the title of 'Global Citizenship'. I have not read any of these books so I cannot recommend them but I hope to tackle this list in the near future. I am also planning on putting together my own list of books on this topic.

Poll Everywhere

Here is a quick poll I designed for our inquiry project titled, "What does it mean to be a global citizen?".  This tool could be used to asses students knowledge and ideas before and after the project.  One of the main points that I would be looking for by doing this would be to see if this in depth study has changed any of my students ideas.  I want to help students develop a love for humanity and the world through this study and would be curious if they have changed any of their opinions.  I would use this information to help drive our study and also to adapt the study for the next group of students.

This is a site I found that helps make a checklist for student projects. It was really easy to use and could be very useful. I would give it to students help make the assignment clear and so they know the expectations.

Standards That I Would Like to Address With This Project

Here are a few standards that could be addressed with this project, "What does it mean to be a global citizen?"

Social Study Standards for 3rd grade
A.1. Grade Level Expectation: Use maps and globes to locate places and regions
F.6. Grade Level Expectation: Utilize geographic knowledge and skills to support interdisciplinary learning and build competencies required of citizens.

Here is a fun tool that I would use with my students as a way of communication.  At the beginning of the project I would have them post questions they have about what it means to be a global citizen.  I would hope to address each students questions throughout the activities we do in class as well as guide them to a place where they can answer their own questions.  These might help students to come up with subtopic questions they want to answer in their final project.

What does it mean to be a global citizen?

My purpose for this study will be to open students eyes to other cultures around the world.  By knowing about other people and how they live we start to realize that even though we are different in ways, we have many similarities and we are all valuable to the world.  Another underlying goal for this study will be to help children understand themselves better in a global world.   By allowing children to learn more deeply about the world we live in, I hope some might develop a more compassionate view.  I believe that through education we have the opportunity to become passionate about world and can make a huge difference in our world.

I am still in the planning process but I think that students will spend time learning about what it means to be a global citizen through a variety of instruction and discussions.  From there children will have time to explore this concept and what it means to them.  They will have assignments to guide this process and will create an artifact to demonstrate what they have learned and how they have made meaning of this topic.

This site has very student friendly information about countries through out the world.  It would be a good place for children to look to make a choice on what they want to study.  I could give this as an assignment: go home and look up this site. Browse through the countries and select on or two that interest you and then report back to class.

Epals looks like an amazing resource.  It allow classrooms and students to connect with each around the world.  I am amazed at how many classrooms are wanting and waiting to connect with other students.  I am not exactly sure how I will incorporate this into our project yet but there is the option of posting a question and allowing others students to reply.

Here is another resource, it connects a peace corps volunteer to a classroom.  Through a variety of correspondence students can learn in depth about another culture in the world.

iEARN is a site that allows teachers to connect with another school and children to share ideas and work on projects.  There are so many forums and different ways to connect through this site.

Skype has a site to connect classrooms though out the world.  You can post your project and invite others to join you or you can connect with a class that has the same type project in mind.  This would be a great way to ask questions about students in other countries although I am not sure how we will make the time difference work.  It would definitely be worth a try.

This is a site by Time magazine.  It features many places around the world an might be a good starting place for children to research what they want to learn more about. The A day in the life option is really cools as it goes through a typical day that a child would go through.

Here is a new tool I am getting familiar with. It would be a good way to describe or define a new subject or concept. Especially terms like Global Citizenship because it encompasses many ideas, concepts, and subjects.
